- Codex supports two formats: a single AGENTS.md in the root (OpenAI's standard convention shared with several other agents) or .codex/skills/<name>.md for modular skills.
- The npx skills-il add command appends to the existing AGENTS.md if present, or creates a separate skills folder. The modular format is preferred when installing more than one skill.
- Codex loads AGENTS.md automatically each session. Verify it loaded with codex --debug.

What is a skill for Codex?
A skill is an instructions block that goes into AGENTS.md and teaches Codex about your project's rules: code style, regulatory requirements, required external libraries. For example, a skill can enforce that any Israeli VAT-handling code issues invoices in the format Israel Tax Authority requires.
Where does Codex store the skill?
Codex uses AGENTS.md as the standard convention (the same convention Cursor and Aider also support). You can also split into separate files under .codex/skills/. Unlike Claude Code which uses .claude/skills/, Codex adopts a neutral format that works across multiple agents.
Do these skills also work in ChatGPT?
